Are Charities Replacing Churches in America?

Is giving alms the new faith in America? Have charities replaced churches? Clearly people still give from faith (i.e. religious) reasons to many kinds of charities whether they are faith-based or not. But over the years in the United States, the evangelical and Catholic Church have clearly had its problems, scandals and criminals within its walls of prayer and faith.
